Week 28 of My Project 52 Photography Challenge: Taste

home grown veggiesI’m not going to lie, I was really hoping that a challenge theme would come along that would enable me to take an image from my garden. Obviously, I was delighted when I received this week’s Project 52 photography theme: Taste. You may remember, back in week 10, that I had planned to start my first vegetable garden this year. Well, I did it! I ordered a few Earth Boxes, based on a recommendation from a friend, and I planted two types of tomatoes and one Italian Pepper plant. I was a bit nervous in starting this endeavor. I’ve never grown more than a few herbs, mixed in with my flowers, and I just wasn’t sure how well this was going to go. It was a lot easier than I thought, andĀ I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to find my first ripe tomatoes, just two weeks ago!

It has been so great to grab some herbs out of the front garden and then to walk out back and pick some veggies for lunch or dinner. I don’t know if it really tastes better than store bought, or if it is just because I know that I grew them myself, but my goodness do they taste yummy!

The only thing better than the taste of fresh veggies is the memories they evoke. When I was a kid, my grandmother grew tomatoes in her garden. Some of my favorite childhood memories involveĀ picking the ripe tomatoes with her and then making tomato sandwiches for lunch at her house. I don’t know if it was the sandwiches or the conversations we had, that made it so memorable, but I do know that every time I eat fresh picked tomatoes, I am instantly taken back to my grandmother’s kitchen and her warm smile. And so, this image is of some of the fresh veggies from my very first vegetable garden, nestled on one of my grandmother’s serving platters.

This is the most amazing thing!! I can only imagine how cool it must be to be able to grow your own food. My grandfather has a raised garden and I want so badly to learn from him so I can do the same – I just can’t find the time! I must make the time, this is awesome!
