Week 22 of My Project 52 Photography Challenge: Special

I’m so excited to share this week’s Project 52 Photography Challenge image. The theme for week 22 was special, and this week was certainly special in the Smutek house!

Week 22 of My Project 52 Photography Challenge: Special

robot drawingTo most people, this is just your run of the mill, little kid drawing. To us, this marks a special and remarkable amount of progress for our son. I’ve shared before that our son has autism, and part of his autism means that he has delays in a lot of areas that would be typical for other children. I will admit that I would always have a pang of sadness when a friend would post pictures of their kid’s drawings and crafts online. Their 3 year old would be drawing pictures depicting their latest family vacation, while our 4 year old struggled to draw a circle or write his name. Creating a drawing that depicted a scene or of something in his imagination seemed so far away.

Then, all of the sudden, a few weeks ago, something clicked. One day, something special happened: our son sat down and drew a picture! It came out of no where, and of course, we were thrilled. We encouraged him to draw more, and now, he draws almost every day. This is an image my son drew a few weeks ago of a robot and his robot spider. It is so special to us and now hangs proudly in our living room. Our son is drawing so much now, that he has even made a book of his drawings!

These little drawings will always be so special to us!

This is so cute! I love that this moment is captured not only by his physical work of art, but your photograph of it!
