Week 16 of My Project 52 Photography Challenge: Red

Well, we are 16 weeks into my Project 52 Photography Challenge, and I must say, it has been a challenge to keep up with! This week’s challenge was “Red”. I had a busy week in week 16, since I have recently upgraded my entire camera system! It has been so much fun getting to know my new cameras and I am just thrilled with the results. I’ve been a Nikon shooter since I was in my teens (wow, that’s a long time!) and just when I was thinking of making the jump over to Canon, Nikon put out their D750. After researching for several months, I decided to give the D750 a try. I started with just replacing one body to see how I liked things and I snagged this image below…

This is a picture of my Dad, on his 62nd birthday, with my son, Simon, peeking over the counter at him, as he starts to blow out his candle. The only available light was from the candle bouncing off of the white cake, counter, red strawberry shortcake icing and their faces. Strawberry shortcake has always been my Dad’s favorite.

Grandfather and grandson with birthday cakeHere’s some techy stuff for ya… I didn’t know the lights were going to be turned off completely, and we didn’t sing, so I had just seconds to change my exposure and focus (in the dark) for this image. I pushed my ISO to the max: 12,800 and I was just blown away! While I certainly won’t be shooting frequently at this ISO, it was nice to know that I was able to capture this moment. Needless to say, after a bit more testing, I replaced my second body just a few days later. This image may be a bit noisy and not technically perfect, but I love it just the same. This is just one of those images I know I’ll look back on fondly for many, many years.

Be sure to check out week 15 on the blog!

Wow, 12,800! I don’t think it’s noisy at all – I am super impressed. Cute photo!
