Throwback Thursday: Fort Carroll Island

Posted on Oct 24, 2013 in Around Town, Throwback Thursday | 12 Comments

Last week’s Throwback Thursday post was a nice trip down a creative memory lane. So, I went digging a little further and I found these shots I took of Fort Carroll Island on an early morning boat ride that I took with my father.  Fort Carroll Island, which has been abandoned for many years, has since been overtaken by egrets, herons, ibises and cormorants. If you are familiar with the Baltimore area, you have surely seen the fort as you pass over the Key Bridge on the Patapsco River.

Looking back at these photos brings back more than memories of one chilly morning,  in 2008, spent on the boat with my dad. It brings back many memories of my childhood, as we spend many, many mornings, days and evenings boating and fishing on that river.

Can you see the heron?Jennifer Smutek Photography

These cormorants are such silly birds; it is always fun to watch them play in the water. Here, one dapper fellow poses for a photo…Jennifer Smutek Photography

So cool! I never have gone out that way on the water, very cool– very eerie.

I find it interesting that these images come off as eerie and haunting. Having grown up fishing and crabbing these waters since I was a little girl, I find the images so peaceful and full of warmth, security and good memories. It is interesting how our prior experiences shape our perception of imagery. And Lauren, I’m glad you can relate! They are so silly, aren’t they? I could watch their antics all day!

All these pictures are great, but I love the first one. The feeling it gives me is loneliness. We all see different things.
